August 5, 1980 – April 22, 2006
Remembered in the squad’s tribute to Bombardier Myles Mansell and the Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan on April 22, 2006.
Bombardier Myles Stanley John Mansell served with the 5th (British Columbia) Field Artillery Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery. He was killed near Gumbad, Afghanistan, on April 22, 2006, and is remembered among 3CD as Ubique. His callsign is the Royal Canadian Artillery’s motto.

A roadside bomb killed four soldiers in southern Afghanistan on Saturday in the deadliest attack on Canadian forces in four years. The soldiers were travelling in an armoured vehicle called a G-wagon when it was blown onto its side by an improvised explosive device, 70 kilometres north of Kandahar city, around 7:30 a.m. local time Saturday.
Three of the men died at the scene, near Gumbad, a small outpost established by the Canadians two months ago. The fourth died shortly after being transported by helicopter to the hospital at the coalition air base in Kandahar.
The Defence Department has identified the Canadians:
Cpl. Matthew Dinning, born in Richmond Hill, Ont., and stationed at Petawawa, Ont.
Lieut. William Turner, born in Toronto and stationed at Edmonton,
Bombardier Myles Mansell, born in Victoria, B.C., and stationed at Victoria.
Cpl. Randy Payne, stationed in Wainwright, Alta.
The four soldiers were in a jeep that was part of a mixed convoy made up of more heavily armoured vehicles, such as LAVs and Bisons.

“Bombardier Mansell was known to many as “Smiley Myley,” which aptly described him. At his wake, beside his casket, stood a lone wreath. The inscription read, “Thank you from all British Columbians.” It was sent by Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo.”
Canadian Virtual War Memorial Veterans Affairs Canada
“He paid the supreme sacrifice to help others. In his mind, he was always home. In our hearts, he will always be home. Myles, I love you and you will never be forgotten.”
Spoken at his funeral CBC News report 3 May 2006
“It was this strong conviction to serve his country that led Myles to volunteer for service in Afghanistan with the 5th Field Artillery Regiment. His family supported him in his decision to do what he loved.”

I had just watched the movie "Taking Chance" with Kevin Bacon when I got the noticed that our friend RailRd had passed. I was trying to find ingame photo's of Railrd and I came across Ubique's photo's and Phew's posts. Just feeling pretty sad today. Then the rush of pride of being a 3CD member, thinking of all the hours I spent riding in lafflies / beddies, all the missions. Though most of us havn't met, I still feel like we're as close to a online family as you can get. S!
